Background and purpose
Cancerview connects Canadians to online services, information and resources for cancer control. It is an ever-evolving portal that brings together resources for cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and supportive, palliative and end-of-life care. Through its collaborative tools, Cancerview also links people in the Canadian cancer community to each other. Cancerview is funded by Health Canada through the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.
This policy applies solely to personal information collected on Cancerview.
The Partnership’s privacy and security framework
The Privacy and Security Framework forms the basis of the Partnership’s robust information security program, encompassing a broad array of information technology standards and policies. All of the Partnership’s information technology and Information management standards and policies are modelled after industry standards and are designed to inform and guide a broad range of IT security related activities across the portfolio of work at the Partnership. The information security program positively impacts the entire organization, with systems security activities and operational guidance that support daily and strategic business operations, as well as consultation, technical, and policy oversight to various project activities that leverage the Partnership’s corporate information systems.
No personal information is required to visit or browse Cancerview. If you choose to subscribe to newsletters or electronic updates, we will ask for your email address and language preference.
You may withdraw your consent to the use of your personal information by cancelling your registration through the Help Desk or by contacting our privacy officer as provided below. If you withdraw your consent, you may not be able to use all sections and features of Cancerview.
Personal information collected by the Partnership
If you register as a Cancerview user, we collect personal information for your user profile. In addition, we collect personal information that you may post on the site such as your comments on a discussion board. As such, users are strongly discouraged from uploading or posting personal or personal health information about themselves (past what they provide for the creation of their user profile during registration) or others (such as members of the public, friends and family) onto Cancerview.
If you register to access Collaborative Communities and/or the eLearning service, or other features that may be made available to registered users, you will be asked to provide us with the following personal information to create your user profile:
- First name;
- Last name;
- Middle name (optional);
- Email address;
- Phone number (optional);
This information will be used to customize content or identify services or collaborative communities and/or the eLearning service that may be of relevance to you. It will also enable you to actively participate in online collaborative communities. Once you register, a user name will be automatically assigned to you.
If you subscribe to receive updates or newsletters from Cancerview, or from the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, we collect your email address and language preference.
If you request technical support from our Help Desk, whether you are a registered Cancerview user or not, the following information is required in order for us to respond to your request:
- User name (if applicable);
- Email address;
- Technical details of incident;
- Contact phone number (optional, if there is a need to call you back to complete your service request).
Location of information
All personal information collected by the Partnership for your profile is stored in Ontario.
Use and disclosure of your personal information by the Partnership
When you register as a Cancerview user, you create your own profile. The first name, last name, and user name of your profile information will be displayed to all registered Cancerview users participating within restricted communities to which you belong or have been granted membership.
Profile information is used by the Partnership to provide you access to Cancerview.
In addition, the Partnership will use your personal information to:
- administer your profile with us;
- provide you with notification of portal information;
- use your information on an aggregate, non-identified basis for the purposes of planning;
- provide system administration and resolving technical issues that may arise;
- process access requests; and
- provide a record of correspondence with you, whether by telephone or email to resolve any technical support issues based on your request.
Your use of Cancerview is your agreement to the disclosure of your personal information to other Cancerview users within your restricted and collaborative communities. These are the communities which you have joined as a Cancerview user. The Partnership will not disclose your personal information to any third party organizations without your agreement to disclose your personal information.
These third parties are contractually bound to use privacy practices and security standards as established by the Partnership.
The Partnership may be required to disclose your personal information as permitted or required to by law, for example:
- to a government institution, law enforcement or other authority that has lawful authority to obtain the information;
- to comply with a subpoena or warrant or an order made by a court, person or entity with jurisdiction to compel the production of information;
- in urgent circumstances to protect the life, health or security of any person; or
- to comply with court rules regarding the production of records and information.
Please keep in mind that comments, messages and other information that you choose to share while using Cancerview’s social networking features, such as discussion boards, will be available to members of applicable community groups. All sharing of personal information on discussion boards is done at your own risk.
Personal information collected by the Partnership during registration, when provisioning support, within a user’s personal profile, posts and uploads is maintained and preserved to ensure the integrity of business records and service delivery for all current and future users. Personal information as described above is not automatically deleted if the associated user account is deleted from the Cancerview portal.
Access and release of personal information request
Access and release of personal information (to third parties) will be facilitated via an Access and Release of Personal Information Request Form. This form is in compliance with The Partnership’s Access and Release of Personal Information Policy.
We have adopted reasonable security measures in an effort to protect personal information from loss, misuse or alteration while it is under our custody and control. We use technical, contractual, administrative and physical measures to protect against unauthorized access.
Other than limited access by the Partnership and contracted suppliers in order to carry out account administration functions as described above, the personal information you create in your profile is accessible only by you using your user name and password. To protect the integrity of your profile, you must keep your password confidential. You are responsible for all uses of Cancerview by anyone using your password.
Links to third party websites
Cancerview may contain links to other websites that operate independently of the Partnership and are not under our control. We provide links to other websites solely for your convenience and information. Other websites may have their own privacy notices, which we suggest you review if you visit any linked websites. The Partnership is not responsible for the privacy practices of these organizations or the information that is collected through those websites or for any other use or disclosure of information by the operators of those websites.
We encourage you to be aware when you leave Cancerview and to read the privacy statements of websites that collect personally identifiable information.
A note on session cookies
Disabling or deleting cookies will restrict your use of Cancerview.
Disabling cookies will result in authenticated services such as Collaborative Group Spaces and eLearning being unavailable.
